How is smoking impacting your health?

Stoptober is the Department of Health & Social Care’s annual quit smoking campaign, designed to encourage and support people who smoke to make a quit attempt.

Research shows that if you can stop smoking for 28 days, you’re five times more likely to quit for good.

As part of this year’s Stoptober campaign, our Be Smoke Free team are inviting smokers to attend our Breathe Easy – Free Carbon Monoxide (CO) Screening events throughout October.

Find out your CO level in just 30 seconds

You know how many cigarettes you smoke, but do you know how much carbon monoxide you take in?

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas released when tobacco burns. Unlike carbon dioxide (CO₂), which is a natural gas that we breathe out, carbon monoxide is a harmful poison that reduces the amount of oxygen your blood can carry around your body.

The effects of smoking often can’t be seen or felt straight away, which can make it difficult to understand the impact smoking is having on your health.

A simple CO test provides an instant measure of the harm caused by smoking and can help you see what is happening inside your body.

Check out our video from the team to show you what happens during a carbon monoxide test.

Why get a CO reading?

A carbon monoxide screening can:

  • Show the level of carbon monoxide currently in your body.
  • Provide instant, personal evidence of the impact smoking is having on your health.
  • Demonstrate how quickly your body begins to recover when you stop smoking.
  • Identify potential exposure to second-hand smoke or dangerous environmental carbon monoxide.
  • Give you a valuable starting point if you’re thinking about quitting.

The best part? The test takes just 30 seconds, provides instant results, and there is no obligation to quit smoking.

The value of face-to-face support

Our drop-in events are more than just a CO test.

Meeting with one of our Stop Smoking Advisors in person gives you the opportunity to ask questions, discuss your smoking habits, and receive personalised advice in a supportive and welcoming environment.

Face-to-face appointments help build a stronger connection between you and your advisor, making conversations feel more natural, engaging and tailored to your individual needs.

If you’re ready to take the next step on the day, our advisors can also talk you through the free stop smoking support available through One You Cheshire East.
