After experiencing significant mobility challenges, Walter faced a tough journey ahead. Relying on two walking sticks and struggling with daily tasks, he felt stuck and uncertain about his future. “I wasn’t in a good place personally, I couldn’t even put my socks on,” Walter shared.
Referred by his GP, Walter joined the Stand Strong Falls Prevention programme with the hope of improving his mobility. What he gained was far more than that.
Initially hesitant, Walter found encouragement and support from Gaynor, the programme’s instructor, at the weekly group sessions. “The classes have been brilliant,” he said. “They’re really social, with a great mix of people and Gaynor is fantastic! Knowledgeable, supportive and always encouraging.”
Walter embraced the programme wholeheartedly, attending group sessions and keeping up with home exercises. Over the course of six months, he saw a remarkable transformation. “I used to use two sticks to get around, I don’t use them anymore. I can walk around Knutsford with much better mobility,” he shared proudly. “It’s had such a positive impact on my confidence.”
The One You Cheshire East programme didn’t just improve his physical strength; it revitalised his lifestyle. With a busy social calendar and renewed energy, Walter is now setting personal goals, including planting two trees in memory of his late wife.
While he found some of the balance and walking exercises challenging at first, Walter appreciated how Gaynor gradually increased the intensity, introducing weights and encouraging unaided walking. His favourite part? “Meeting new people and socialising – it really lifts your spirits.”
To anyone considering joining the Stand Strong programme, his message is simple: “Just do it, I did! It gives you positive vibes!”
Walter’s inspiring journey highlights the power of perseverance, community support and the transformative impact of tailored exercise programmes.
