Paul Clifford regains confidence and independence through the Stand Strong programme

Published: 8 May 2026

Paul Clifford, who is living with Parkinson’s, has seen a significant improvement in confidence and mobility after taking part in our Stand Strong programme, following a challenging period of reduced independence.

Paul depends on his walking buggy to get around and described how difficult daily life had become. “I suffer with Parkinson’s, so I depend on my walking buggy (wheels) all the time,” he explained. His mobility challenges were made worse after he was bed‑ridden for eight weeks between October and December.

During this time, Paul missed everyday activities. “I missed my driving and sitting in my garden to relax.” He said.

After speaking with his GP, Paul was referred to our Stand Strong programme to support his mobility and independence. He also shared how the opportunity came about, saying, “I got involved with Stand Strong classes after a conversation with a friend who suggested attending.”

From the very beginning, Paul looked forward to each session. “I looked forward to my classes and the social aspect, especially the tutor’s support, encouragement and enthusiasm” He said.

Since starting the programme, Paul has noticed a real change. “I have the confidence to walk much better and can now enjoy sitting in my garden.” He explained. He also highlighted the wider impact, adding, “The classes gave me a positive outlook, using my buggy less, walking around the house more.” Paul has remained committed by “always doing my exercises within the week at home.”

Looking ahead, Paul has clear goals, “My goals would be to drive again (even if it is to the corner shop), walking unaided when I can (at home).”He said.

“My favourite part of the sessions are definitely the walking exercises and the significant change of scenery from home, meeting a great group of lovely people.” He also spoke highly of the instructor, explaining, “My instructor was excellent, full of praise and support, and even contacted me when I could not attend the class.”

Reflecting on his experience, Paul shared his advice for others: “I would say to anyone thinking about joining – make sure you are committed as this is very important.” Although the programme has now finished, Paul added, “I miss attending and would love to attend again.”

The 12‑week, Stand Strong programme is designed for people who want to improve their strength, balance and confidence to stay steady and independent. By offering encouragement, understanding and practical support, One You Cheshire East helps people build strength and stability in a way that feels manageable and supportive.
