Re-Shape and Active Lives member Sue joined because she wanted to be fitter, healthier and see her grandchildren grow up.
“We go away quite a lot, and I don’t want to be the one that they’re all sat waiting for to catch up.”
Sue has now completed our 12-week, Re-Shape programme which she thoroughly enjoyed and now goes for a monthly check-in with her weight management Advisor.
Since joining Re-Shape, Sue now attends the gym at Everybody Health and Leisure’s Crewe Lifestyle Centre which she is also enjoying. Sue shares
“I was a little bit of a couch potato, because I was hiding behind me, I suffer a bit with my nerves, anxiety and so forth and it took a lot to actually fill the form in and turn up, but I did it and it’s helped me look at life for me and not for other people all the time.”
Before Sue started, she would walk up the stairs with one hand, three/ four steps in front of her, holding onto the rail and getting to the top of the stairs exhausted.
“I was really struggling, whereas now I can walk up the stairs carrying a pile of washing, ironing, not having to worry about holding onto the banister and doing it without realising it, and then getting to the top of the stairs and going wow have I just done that.”
Walking her grandson to school has also changed.
“I now have a conversation with him walking to school, which again I would never have thought about doing, because I was exhausted. I would be coughing and I would have to stop and wait due to further health problems I’ve got.”
However, since going to the gym and losing weight, it has helped Sue to control this better and is more manageable now.
Sue’s blood pressure has evened out and she is not running out of energy the same as she was, her asthma seems more controlled.
Nervous walking into the Re-Shape meetings at first, Sue sat at the back and was very quiet. As the weeks progressed, her seating progressed and she soon found herself answering questions and helping other people in the group too.
“I need to do it for me. You meet people in the gym, and you meet people at these classes and we’re all on the same journey.”
Since taking part in Re-Shape, Sue thinks about the foods she eats now.
“Before, I’d think, oh, let’s have a burger, but now I’d probably leave the bread and just eat all the good stuff. Don’t get me wrong I have a takeaway, I’ll have a Chinese I’ll have an Indian, we all love that.
You’ve got to do it for you, as well as, like I say, your grandchildren, your families. You might have a wedding coming up where you want to lose weight for it and get healthier and be dancing on the dance floor. Go for it, go and have a go. If it’s not for you, there is no pressure.”
