Local Crewe resident Jacqui has spoken about how joining the 12‑week Active Lives programme at Crewe Lifestyle Centre has helped her take the first steps towards feeling like herself again, both physically and mentally.
Following the loss of both her parents, Jacquline describes a long period where life felt extremely difficult. Her mobility was limited, her confidence was low, and her mental health had been affected to the point where she couldn’t see a positive future ahead.
“I wasn’t really living,” Jacquline explained. “I was just existing.”
It was during this time that Jacqui was introduced to the 12‑week, Active Lives programme and began working with her coach, James. Although she was initially unsure about the idea of using the gym, Jacqui decided to give it a go, supported at every step with reassurance and understanding.
“I was very reluctant when the gym was first mentioned, but now, I absolutely love it.”
“Initially I was very immobile. Very low mood and self-esteem, basically I had given up on life since my parents passed away and couldn’t see a future.”
However, with gentle encouragement, realistic goals and a supportive approach that worked around her needs, she started to notice changes, not just to her physical health, but to how she felt in herself.
“The support and time James gave me has massively improved my health, my mental health and my confidence,” she said.
Despite James being keen to downplay his role, Jacqui feels his approach made all the difference in helping her stay committed.
“He’ll say he wasn’t part of my journey, because that’s the type of person he is,” she said. “But if he hadn’t been so understanding, approachable and accommodating, I wouldn’t have stayed.”
Now, at the end of the 12‑weeks, Jacqui says she feels like her life has changed direction.
“My life has done a complete turnaround,” Jacquline shared. “I’m no longer just existing, I’m actually living.”
So positive has the experience been that Jacqui has since recommended James to several people who are looking to become active and build their confidence in a safe, supportive environment.
Jacqui’s experience highlights the role One You Cheshire East programmes play in supporting people to move more, feel better and reconnect with everyday life at their own pace.
