Falls Prevention Week 18 – 22 Sept: From Awareness to Action

We are committed to empowering all older adults in Cheshire East to age well and stay falls free. This year we are supporting Falls Prevention Week (18 – 22 September 2023), a national health campaign to increase awareness around falls health and injury prevention.

Did you know that falling is not a normal part of ageing? Falls are a common, but often overlooked, cause of injury. According to the NHS, around one in three adults over 65, and half of people over 80, will have at least one fall a year.

Most falls do not result in serious injury. But there's always a risk that a fall could lead to broken bones, and it can cause the person to lose confidence, become withdrawn, and feel as if they have lost their independence.

This year’s theme for Falls Prevention Week is #FromAwarenessToAction, which encourages Cheshire East residents who are 65+ to take control of their health and make small lifestyle changes to make falls preventable. One way this can be done is through our Stand Strong - Falls Prevention programme. This gentle exercise programme is suitable for anyone over 65 who is looking to improve their strength, balance and mobility. The programme lasts for 26 weeks and is held once a week for 60 minutes. The simple exercises are designed for older adults and are adaptable to match all abilities and circumstances. Most of them can be done seated if required.

Who is our programme suitable for?

If you answer yes to any of the questions below then our support may be useful to you. You may also wish to discuss your risk of falling with your doctor. If you are aged 65 or over:

Have you fallen in the last 12 months?

Do you feel unsteady when standing or walking?

Do you worry about falling?

You may also be eligible if you are under 65 and have a specific health condition that is linked to an increased risk of falls.

Please sign up here and we will book you in for an initial assessment.
